Overview
00

Cooking, connected.

The CamOven is Arçelik's next-generation smart oven, designed to work seamlessly within the HomeWhiz connected home ecosystem. My task was to design the mobile companion experience, turning a physical appliance into an intelligent, responsive part of daily life. Remote control, live monitoring, and recipe sync, all within a calm and coherent interface.

Problem Definition
01

The gap between physical and digital

Smart appliances rarely fail users because of hardware. They fail because of disconnected software experiences. Users couldn't trust the app to reflect the real state of the oven, which led to repeated physical checks, abandoned remote sessions, and low adoption.

The core challenge: design an interface that feels as reliable and immediate as standing in front of the appliance itself. The app needed to earn trust through clarity, speed, and honest feedback at every step.

Project Structure
02

Research → Flow → UI → Test

The project was structured in four phases. First, competitive benchmarking and user interviews to understand how people interact with kitchen appliances remotely. Second, information architecture and user flow mapping to define the core journeys: first-time setup, daily cooking, and scheduled use.

Third, high-fidelity UI design within the HomeWhiz design system, ensuring visual consistency with the broader app family. Finally, usability testing with real users in a kitchen environment to validate that the interface held up under real-world conditions.

My Role
03

End-to-end ownership of the mobile experience

I owned the full UX and UI design scope for the CamOven module within HomeWhiz. This meant user research, journey mapping, wireframing, high-fidelity design, interaction specification, and handoff to engineering. I worked closely with hardware teams to align the app's feedback states with the oven's actual sensor outputs.

Collaboration extended to the HomeWhiz platform team to integrate the new oven controls into existing architecture without disrupting the established design language.

Design Solution
04

Live feedback. Zero ambiguity.

The app communicates oven state in real time, with current temperature, active program, and remaining time displayed prominently at all times. Preheating, remote start, and program adjustment are accessible within two taps from the home screen. Every interaction confirms the physical outcome, closing the loop between app action and oven response.

A guided recipe mode syncs cooking steps directly to the oven, automatically adjusting temperature and time between stages. This turns the app from a remote control into an active cooking assistant, the most requested feature from user research.

What's Next
05

Expanding across the connected kitchen

The CamOven module is designed as a scalable template for future appliance integrations within HomeWhiz. The patterns established here, such as real-time state feedback, guided operation modes, and cross-device recipe sync, are being adapted for cooktops, dishwashers, and refrigerators.

Longer term, the vision is a unified kitchen orchestration layer: where appliances communicate with each other, and the app anticipates the next step in any cooking scenario without requiring manual input.
